Walker Bay
Walker Bay
Located on the south coast of the Western Cape, a couple of hours' drive from Cape town, Walker Bay is a cool-climate wine region, producing some of the best wines in South Africa. With a maritime climate, and Antarctic currents cooling the long warm summers and slowing the ripening of the grapes, wines from here exhibit great fruit focus alongside exuberant natural acidity. Soils are shale and sandstone, with some granite pockets. A large proportion of clay holds moisture, keeping the vines hydrated while the yields are kept low to ensure good concentration of natural fruit. The region is highly regarded for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and fresh, mineral Sauvignon Blanc, and also makes wines from Pinotage and Syrah, amongst others.
